Block paving is popular: it is durable, attractive and can incorporate permeable blocks if SuDS compliance is needed. Resin-bound surfacing (stone aggregate in epoxy resin) offers a contemporary finish and good drainage. Tarmac is quick, economical and suitable for larger areas. A well-built driveway lasts 15 to 20 years or more. Poor installation fails in 5 to 10. We do the groundwork right: adequate sub-base (100mm compacted hardcore), proper edging and drainage, and skilled laying of the surface. Driveway construction and surface options
Ground assessment and drainage design
We survey your driveway area, assess soil type, groundwater and existing drainage, and check for fall and slope. If the ground is poorly draining or low-lying, we design appropriate drainage (soakaway, land drain, permeameter test if needed). Modern Building Regulations encourage permeable surfacing and SuDS, which we incorporate if relevant to your site. We mark out the driveway, set levels and confirm drainage routes before construction starts.
Sub-base preparation and compaction
A stable sub-base is critical to driveway longevity. We excavate to the required depth (typically 150 to 200mm for a residential driveway), remove topsoil and vegetation, and lay a compacted hardcore base (usually recycled demolition stone or similar, 100mm minimum). We compact in layers to achieve proper density. This stops settlement and premature failure of the surface.
Block paving installation
Block paving is laid over the compacted sub-base on a 30 to 40mm mortar or sand bed. We select pavers to your specification (colour, size, pattern), lay them to a level and consistent line, cut edge blocks as needed, and compact the surface. Once set, we brush sand or resin into the joints to bind and stabilize the pavers. Permeable blocks and open-jointed installation can be specified if SuDS compliance is required.
Resin-bound and tarmac surfaces
Resin-bound surfaces are mixed on site from epoxy resin and stone aggregate, then trowelled onto the prepared sub-base. They set quickly and offer an attractive, permeable finish. Tarmac is laid hot, rolled and compacted to create a smooth, durable surface. Both are quicker than block paving and suitable for larger areas. We discuss durability, maintenance and cost with you.
Edge restraint and drainage management
Driveway edges are restrained with kerbs or edging blocks to prevent lateral movement and cracking. We install edge restraint to specification and ensure it is stable and level. Drainage (soakaway, land drain, gully connection) is completed as designed, tested, and left clear for water to drain away from the building and subsoil.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?+
Planning permission is often not required for a residential driveway, especially if the property is not in a conservation area.
